Ensamples – people who a sample of the things they are discipling people in, they are the substance of the very thing they are teaching
Chapter 1
Peter is speaking about an absolute truth… when we become Christians, we have been born-again into a Living Hope
1 Peter 1:3-5
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,4 To an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
The Hope of God is not an Idea, it is not a concept, it is not an optimistic desire. It is a Living Reality that is in Eternity. It exists in the future as a real thing, real substance
God has put within us the seed of the future, which is uncovered through the trials and temptations, the sufferings and persecution.
1 Peter 5:6-8
6 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time:7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:
Get READY for ACTION!
One Key is HUMILITY: As you humble yourself, God will exalt you
God has placed us on a trajectory in which He wants to bring forth His glory. That trajectory includes the circumstances we are facing now.
God wants to bring us to a new level of Spiritual Discipline and Spiritual Reality in our lives.
Be SOBER – being in control, having our whole spirit person under the control of the Holy Spirit. Not to depend on the flesh but to be honing into the Reality of God
To be LOCK-IN into prayer
Our way of perceiving things would be changed, from looking at it with our eyes to looking at it with the eyes of our spirit
1 Peter 5:10
10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, establish, strengthen, settle you.
The suffering is not meant to kill us or make us depress but to burn off the things we were dependent upon and addicted to so that the essential things of Christ will come out.
The suffering you are experiencing has an aftermath, has an end to it
4 things
God will perfect you
“What’s perfected before the breakage is even more perfect than the perfection before the breakage”
God will establish you
To make you solid like granite. Conviction comes from a place of shaking.
God will strengthen you
God will fill us up with strength. It is an incremental process.
God will settle you
God is cutting off many extraneous things, so that we grow not in just superficial things, but in the things of the life of God.
God is causing us to be a Church that is NOT just to be a fluffy church that has lots of extraneous things but has no substance
v. 1 “….weaning from old sinful habits of always expecting to get our own way…”
v.2 “….. live out our lives (set free) to pursue what God wants instead of being tyrannized by what you want…”
A Tale of 2 Men: As we ponder on th lives of these 2 men of God (John Bunyan and King Solomon), we need to ask ourselves – how then are we to live out our lives on earth?
Are we living for God or Ourselves?
1 Peter 4:3-6 (NIV)
v. 3-4 “For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to do – living in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.“
v. 5-6 “But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is the reason the gospel is preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit”
Consider times in our lives where we experience LTI, i.e.
Loss
Time
Injury
Living for God
1 Peter 4:7 – 10 (NIV)
“The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms”
LISTEN
God speaks to us (and the world) through:
Scriptures
Psalm 81:8 “Hear me, my people, and I will warn you – if you would only listen to me, Israel”
His Messengers (apostles, prophets, church elders, pastors, etc.)
TRUST
Cooperating with God (Proverbs 16:3)
Trust that God is in control
Trust God’s promise for success
INTERCEDE
Pray regularly (Acts 16:16)
Pray in all circumstances (Acts 16:25)
Pray changes history
Summary – Our Goal in Life
1 Peter 4:7 – 10 (NIV)
v. 7 – 8 “The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
v.9 -10 “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms”
The Christian life is not easy
Choose to stay close to JESUS
We become stronger, wiser and more Christ-like
All of us are blessed to be a BLESSING . .
Final Questions?
God has shown us a way that we can overcome our difficult circumstances….so how do we choose to live out the rest of our lives on earth?
Are we living a “lip-service” Christian life or are we living out the PURPOSE for which we have be chosen and called for?
