Biblical Concept of Fatherhood & Sonship (Part 1)

Pr Roland Seow

Romans 8:14 New King James Version (NKJV)
14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

*2 Corinthians 6:18 New King James Version (NKJV)
18 “I will be a Father to you,
And you shall be My sons and daughters,
Says the Lord Almighty.”
[*Editor's Note: Added to emphasise]

Acts 2:17 New King James Version (NKJV)
17 ‘And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God,
That I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh;
Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,
Your young men shall see visions,
Your old men shall dream dreams.

Pr Chris Ong:
People will say the same words but have different meaning.

Fatherhood will pay a great reward but it needs to be lived out. Relationship is at the core of our faith. "Love God, love others" is relational.

Fatherhood is in the implementation. It is easier to talk about but harder to implement.

Fatherhood and sonship is a good foundation for authentic discipleship.

Pr Roland Seow (continued):

The more affluent they are, they more needy they are.

There is an increasing number of people, especially young people, getting into depression.

People have been abused, rejected and neglected in families. Families are just broken all over the place.

People are left seeking for alternatives that will heal this pain in their hearts.

Sin, selfishness and self-centredness is at the very core of it.

Jesus came to create His family and to empower them.

Acts 16:31 New King James Version (NKJV)
31 So they said, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved, you and your household.”

Salvation is for households.

Sadly, the church has deviated from God's pattern and gone into an organisational model.

Hebrews 8:5 New King James Version (NKJV)
5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.”

The man made model works well but it produces bosses and manager and workers with hireling mentality.

Unless there is a raising up of fathers and mothers in the house and turning their hearts to the next generation and their hearts back to the fathers and mothers, the land and the nation is cursed and is not blessed.

God will remove the curse from the land.

The organisational model will produce the slave mentality of service. Just like the Israelites who were led out of slavery by Moses and through the wilderness to Mount Sinai.

Hebrews 3-5 New King James Version (NKJV)
The Son Was Faithful
3 Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Christ Jesus, 2 who was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was faithful in all His house. 3 For this One has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, inasmuch as He who built the house has more honor than the house. 4 For every house is built by someone, but He who built all things is God. 5 And Moses indeed was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which would be spoken afterward, 6 but Christ as a Son over His own house, whose house we are if we hold fast the confidence and the rejoicing of the hope [a]firm to the end.

How you treat and honour the church will determine the blessings that God has for you.

How many people can be true sons and daughters of the House?

Your servants don't work to build your home.

Building a family requires an atmosphere of honour.

If we are a church who know how to honour one another, then it invites the glory of God into the house automatically.

We are all sons and daughters building the house together.

The language of family was used in the Old Testament but somehow we have lost it.

Christianity is about relationship with God and man. But do we really practice it in church?

Fruitfulness comes out of intimate relationships.

Fruitfulness is about intimacy of relationships.

In the church, it is not about being task oriented but about being fruitful.

Yes, you may get things done but it may not have fruitfulness.

It is not about being mechanical but being organic.

The church at large has become consumer church.

Why go to church when you can get the best preachers that can scratch an itch in your ear?

It is not about exciting songs.

Entertainment doesn't satisfy the inner longings of your hearts.

It doesn't change lives. They are the same, if not worse than before. It shows up in times of crisis.

Ridiculous teachers teach heresy. Eg. the extreme grace teaching. "Once saved, always saved."

In Revelation 2 and 3, Jesus tells the churches to repent, repent and repent.

Our names can be blotted out from the Book of Life. (Revelation 3:5)

God started with a family in mind.

He didn't start with a mega church in mind.

The Pharisees and Sadducees wanted to kill Jesus because He called God His Father.

Jesus prayed: "Our Father in heaven..." (Matthew 6:19)

Why did God choose Abram to be the patriarch or progenitor of the Jews (and three world religions)?

Abram means exalted father.

He became Abraham. He became filled with the Holy Spirit.

The Spirit of Elijah is to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children.

John 14:12 New King James Version (NKJV)
The Answered Prayer
12 “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I go to My Father.

The church at large is more concerned about programmes and entertainment.

In building for God a big healthy family, all of the above will be achieved.

God has not built the church to focus on one person.

No spiritual father is perfect. We have to acknowledge our imperfections.

Roger Seow:
Benefits of the fatherhood and sonship model to a son:

1) Sense of belonging

2) Boldness and emboldened to grow in ministry

3) Able to bloom where planted

Deuteronomy 5:16 New King James Version (NKJV)
16 ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may be well with you in the land which the Lord your God is giving you.

When we honour our spiritual parents, it will truly become well for us.

1 Corinthians 4:15 New King James Version (NKJV)
15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.
