He Is Risen
16 Now when the Sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices, that they might come and anoint Him. 2 Very early in the morning, on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. 3 And they said among themselves, “Who will roll away the stone from the door of the tomb for us?” 4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone had been rolled away—for it was very large. 5 And entering the tomb, they saw a young man clothed in a long white robe sitting on the right side; and they were alarmed.

Mary Magdalene Sees the Risen Lord
9 Now when He rose early on the first day of the week, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with Him, as they mourned and wept. 11 And when they heard that He was alive and had been seen by her, they did not believe.
Jesus Appears to Two Disciples
12 After that, He appeared in another form to two of them as they walked and went into the country. 13 And they went and told it to the rest, but they did not believe them either.
The Great Commission
14 Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16 He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. 17 And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; 18 they[b] will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.”
Christ Ascends to God’s Right Hand
19 So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. 20 And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen.[c]
The Empty Tomb (v1-5)
He is Alive
The fact that the stone was rolled away, it was the supernatural work of God.
There was no dead body in the tomb.
Death is the result of sin.
Jesus has conquered death because there was no physical body there. Jesus has victory over death. The curse of sin is broken. That's the empty tomb. Jesus is alive.

Our Final Victory

The Angel's Announcement (v6-7)
He is Alive
It is the supernatural work of God. God raised Jesus Christ. The Resurrection was the supernatural work of God.
The word of promise

28 “But after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.”
Jesus keeps His word. His promise was kept. His word is yea and amen.
His Appearance to His Disciples (v9-14)
He is Alive
As disciples, we go through life in a cruel world with injustice, bitterness and unforgiveness, causing the hardening of the heart and unbelief.
No matter what situation we go through--because He is alive--we can look for that one encounter with the Lord.
Jesus is alive. He can come and visit you. That can change and transform us.
His Power of Resurrection (v15-21)
He is Alive
His resurrection is not head knowledge. He is real. Signs and wonders follow. Because God is real.
By experience, they knew that Jesus is alive.

You Can Experience His Love

The penalty of our sin has been paid in full.
Because He is alive, we have hope. We can live our lives depending on Him.
His Love Can Give Us Assurance To Live a Life of Freedom from Sin

10 For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.
We Can Put Our Hope in Him
The resurrection guarantees Jesus' return. (Acts 1:11)
The resurrection is the guarantee of ultimate justice. (Matthew 25:31-46)
We Too Can Have This Gift of Eternal Life
The resurrection guarantees that God can raise us from the dead to immortal life. Christ died for us so that we might live forever with Him. And Christ rose from the dead to show us that He can offer us eternal life. (1 Corinthians 15:12-20)
God gives us purpose. We can live that dream to glorify God.
We matter to God.
What does this mean to us?
1) Assurance of having a place in heaven.
2) Freedom to live free from the power of sin. Without the power of God, we cannot overcome sin.
3) There is forgivenesss of sin.
Jesus Our Saviour
1) The Bible tells us that God is the only one who is perfect.
2) Sin separates us from God, making us His adversary His enemy.
3) But Christ took on our sin and by faith awards us with His righteousness.
4) To be connected to God we need a saviour!
Who Needs A Saviour?
1) Those who don't have Christ in their hearts.
2) Those who struggle with sin, guilt and sin.
3) Those who are not sure they have a place in heaven.
4) Those who need the mercy of God.

A) Dying to self-purpose

47 Some of those who stood there, when they heard that, said, “This Man is calling for Elijah!” 48 Immediately one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and offered it to Him to drink.
49 The rest said, “Let Him alone; let us see if Elijah will come to save Him.”
50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
Fellowship with God was cut off. Why? Because of the sin of the world.
1) Sin separates man from God
If man is to fellowship with God, the sin issue has to be resolved.
If God knows man was going to sin, why did He create man in the first place?
2) Jesus died for our sins.
Because of sin, the world is far from God.
Jesus died on that cross two thousand years ago. Without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness.
Is there anything that God cannot do?
God cannot fellowship with sin. Sin has to be sorted out. God in Jesus died for our sin. By the shedding of blood, the sin of man is paid for.
3) Jesus God died as man.
By allowing His Son, Jesus is God Himself.
Jesus emptied Himself and went on the cross as a man.
When He was nailed and hung on the cross, the Spirit of God left Him.
God had to take it upon Himself to save us.
God now gives the right to become the children of God.
4) Death to self - Alive in Christ
Application
1) Are we pursuing our own purposes and ambitions or are we willing to subject the purpose of our lives to God
- incorrect notions about calling and lifestyle
You may be a Christian. This night, two thousand years ago Jesus died on the cross. This means that you died with Him.
How come are we not experiencing the joy?
Out of the abundance of your heart, the mouth speaks.
We are afraid to completely yield ourselves to God and die to self and completely yield to His purposes.
- the God who called you is also the one who made you
We don't come on Sunday and tell God He takes one quarter.
We forget and lose out on the very purpose of Good Friday.
Wait till you understand the fullness of the Holy Spirit and you'll understand how great God is.
2) How to fulfill God's calling for your life
- willingness?
God is a gentle Spirit.
- FAITH = intimacy, obedience, courage and perseverance
Faith must be translated into works.
If we are willing...
If we obey...
If we have courage...
If we persevere...
God will open doors for you.
Otherwise we deceive ourselves.
Give your heart to Christ and you will know joy beyond compare.
B) Dying to emotional insecurities
Jesus died for the emotional and physical insecurities of man.
Many servants of God understand this very, very well.
We share the gospel and people mock us. We allow the mockery of the gospel get to us. As a result, we don't share as much.
When you wait upon the Lord and you are serious with Him, He will open up a way for you. So long as you are willing to take whatever it takes.
Jesus died for that mockery as well.
God will open up a way for you to share the gospel.
Application:
1) Mockery when sharing the gospel - but not because of our insensitivity.
2) Scorn when results not consistent to out message - how we handle failure - subjecting our expecrations to God
3) Despised by the world for our spiritual outlook - heavenly minded and of no earthly good?
4) Need for affirmation and praise - secure in God or under delusion
5) Servanthood mentality -
Have you been questioning about the fruit of your labour?
Are you feeling depressed and doing the scorning yourself?
Never judge by what you can see because you never understand what you don't see.
Why is it that I serve God but I don't see results?
Check ourselves first.
Lord, have I done something wrong?
Let the principle of Isaiah come in. Isaiah was sawn in two.
Jeremiah was captured and forced to go into exile.
Peter and the apostles died very tragic deaths.
Never forget we have a higher purpose--not only for this earth but for the new earth to come.
We have died to in Christ on the cross.
C) Dying to physical insecurities
Application:
1) Our fear of physical discomfort and suffering leads us to compromise and flexible moral standards despite knowing we need to be wise as serpents but innocent as doves. (1 Peter 2:21)
2) Our desire for a lavish/luxurious life leads us to a stressful life of mixed priorities and discontentment. (Matthew 6:21)
3) Our foolishness and itchy ears leads us to wrong theology regarding material wealth and physical health (2 Timothy 4:3)
4) Reality of our Hope. (Romans 8:18)
You are a new creation in Christ.
Conclusion:
In the death of Christ on the cross, we have died to:
1) our self purpose
2) our emotional insecurities. We are now secure in God.
3) physical insecurities. God will always look after us. Sufferings will come but these will build up our character.
Otherwise, we undo the death of Christ on the cross.

Never forget we have a higher purpose--not only for this earth but for the new earth to come.
We have died to in Christ on the cross.
C) Dying to physical insecurities

Behold Your Mother

It Is Finished
28 After this, Jesus, knowing[b]that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!”29 Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put iton hyssop, and put it to His mouth. 30 So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.
Application:
1) Our fear of physical discomfort and suffering leads us to compromise and flexible moral standards despite knowing we need to be wise as serpents but innocent as doves. (1 Peter 2:21)
2) Our desire for a lavish/luxurious life leads us to a stressful life of mixed priorities and discontentment. (Matthew 6:21)
3) Our foolishness and itchy ears leads us to wrong theology regarding material wealth and physical health (2 Timothy 4:3)
4) Reality of our Hope. (Romans 8:18)
You are a new creation in Christ.

14 For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; 15 and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again.
16 Therefore, from now on, we regard no one according to the flesh. Even though we have known Christ according to the flesh, yet now we know Him thusno longer. 17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.

Conclusion:
In the death of Christ on the cross, we have died to:
1) our self purpose
2) our emotional insecurities. We are now secure in God.
3) physical insecurities. God will always look after us. Sufferings will come but these will build up our character.
Otherwise, we undo the death of Christ on the cross.
