Hebraic Root - Cultural Insights into words, action and saying of Jesus

Rev Colin Chow
01-04-2017

Calling is for ministry;
Chosen is for greatness.

God's covenant with men with Israel as the mediator:
-Abraham
-Moses
-The New Testament was first given to Jeremiah
-Davidic (not yet come to pass)

Natural Israel - Jews;
Spiritual Israel - we are all sons of Abraham

In the Old Testament, the roles of kings, priests and prophets are separate. David was king. Nathan was prophet.

In the New Testament, Jesus fulfilled the role of prophet, priest and king in the story of Lazarus.

Jesus was on earth for 33 years and ministered for three (3) years.

To understand the four (4) gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), we need to go back to the history, culture, their world views and idioms, sayings, figure of speech in another time that people would not understand.

Idioms - North America:
Straight from the horse's mouth; Taking the bull by the horns; Raining dogs and cats

Over 2000 years of history, unfortunately the church have taken the sayings of Jesus simplistically and applied then to our own culture, doctrine and theology while failing to understand the true meaning of the idioms used by Jesus.

God's covenant with Abraham is good and everlasting. That's where we got our blessing. God has never forsaken us.
From the time of Abraham to now, the river of blessing has flown 4000 years. It has become murky over the passage of time.

In Hebrews 6, God says blessing I will bless you.

We have to go back 2000 years to Jesus to drink clear water.

John 8:3-11New International Version (NIV)
3 The teachers of the law and the Pharisees brought in a woman caught in adultery. They made her stand before the group 4 and said to Jesus, “Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery.5 In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” 6 They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him.

But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. 7 When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” 8 Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground.

9 At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there.10 Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?”

11 “No one, sir,” she said.

“Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”

Jesus saw through their hearts that they were sinners so they ran off.

The time of this event was after John 7 where Jesus went to the feast of tabernacles.

John 7:37-38New International Version (NIV)
37 On the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, “Let anyone who is thirsty come to me and drink. 38 Whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, rivers of living water will flow from within them.”

Jesus declared Himself the living water of life--that He is the Messiah.

Jeremiah 17:13New International Version (NIV)
13 Lord, you are the hope of Israel;
all who forsake you will be put to shame.
Those who turn away from you will be written in the dust
because they have forsaken the Lord,
     the spring of living water.

Where Jesus sat:
Luke 4:16-20New International Version (NIV)
16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. He stood up to read, 17 and the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me,
    because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners
and recovery of sight for the blind,
to set the oppressed free,
19     to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

20 Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him.

Jesus sat at the Seat of Moses which was reserved for the second Moses as prophesised by Moses. That's why everyone's eyes were fastened on Him and they were angry.

Deuteronomy 18:15-22New International Version (NIV)
15 The Lord your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your fellow Israelites. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the Lord your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, “Let us not hear the voice of the Lord our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die.”

17 The Lord said to me: “What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their fellow Israelites, and I will put my words in his mouth. He will tell them everything I command him. 19 I myself will call to account anyone who does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name.20 But a prophet who presumes to speak in my name anything I have not commanded, or a prophet who speaks in the name of other gods, is to be put to death.”

21 You may say to yourselves, “How can we know when a message has not been spoken by the Lord?” 22 If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously, so do not be alarmed.

Isaiah 61:1-2New International Version (NIV)
The Year of the Lord’s Favor

61 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,

because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,

Two portraits of Messiah:
Messiah Ben Joseph - Suffering Servant
Religious Messiah

Messiah Ben David - The Conquering King
Political - military Messiah

Portraits were clear. What was not clear was how both could be speaking about the same person.

Messianic Views:
Hosea 6:3
Then shall we know, if we follow on to know the Lord; His going forth is prepared as the morning; and He shall come unto us as the rain, as the latter and former rain unto the earth.

Matthew 16:13-19New International Version (NIV)
Peter Declares That Jesus Is the Messiah

13 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?”

14 They replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets.”

15 “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter answered, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.”

17 Jesus replied, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven. 18 And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”

The blood of Jesus is still alive in Jerusalem.

153 fish:
John 21New International Version (NIV)
Jesus and the Miraculous Catch of Fish

Afterward Jesus appeared again to his disciples, by the Sea of Galilee. It happened this way:2 Simon Peter, Thomas (also known as Didymus), Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two other disciples were together.3 “I’m going out to fish,” Simon Peter told them, and they said, “We’ll go with you.” So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus.

5 He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you any fish?”

“No,” they answered.

6 He said, “Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.” When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.

7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, “It is the Lord!” As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, “It is the Lord,” he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread.

10 Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you have just caught.” 11 So Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn.

153 = I AM LORD (in Hebrew)

They were convinced that Jesus is God.
Jesus restored Peter as His chief apostle when He instructed him to feed His sheep.

Uncover his feet:
Ruth 3New International Version (NIV)
Ruth and Boaz at the Threshing Floor

3 One day Ruth’s mother-in-law Naomi said to her, “My daughter, I must find a home for you, where you will be well provided for. 2 Now Boaz, with whose women you have worked, is a relative of ours. Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor.3 Wash, put on perfume, and get dressed in your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there until he has finished eating and drinking. 4 When he lies down, note the place where he is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.”

5 “I will do whatever you say,” Ruth answered. 6 So she went down to the threshing floor and did everything her mother-in-law told her to do.

7 When Boaz had finished eating and drinking and was in good spirits, he went over to lie down at the far end of the grain pile. Ruth approached quietly, uncovered his feet and lay down. 8 In the middle of the night something startled the man; he turned—and there was a woman lying at his feet!

9 “Who are you?” he asked.

“I am your servant Ruth,” she said. “Spread the corner of your garment over me, since you are a guardian-redeemer of our family.”

What is the meaning of "spread your garment over me"?
Ruth was asking Boaz to marry her.

Whenever God speaks, there is power.

When God speaks, something significant happens.

Let's restore the fear of the Lord in our lives. For the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.

In the spring (Nisan), God gave three (3) feasts (historically fulfilled during Jesus' first coming):

-Passover (Jesus' death)
-Unleavened bread (burial)
-First fruits (resurrection)

-Pentecost (50 days later - in the month of Sivan) (Holy Spirit) - the church began

Fall feasts (To be fulfilled during the second coming of Jesus):
-Trumpets
-Atonement
-Tabernacles

When is Passover?
Nisan
Exodus 12:1-2New International Version (NIV)
The Passover and the Festival of Unleavened Bread
12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year.

Whose feasts are they anyway?
The Appointed feasts of the LORD.

Leviticus 23:1-2New International Version (NIV)
The Appointed Festivals
23 The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the Israelites and say to them: ‘These are my appointed festivals, the appointed festivals of the Lord, which you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies.

Colossians 2:16-17New International Version (NIV)
Freedom From Human Rules
16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17 These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ.

Paul said it's okay to celebrate a New Moon or Sabbath day provided we focus on Jesus for He is the King of kings and Lord of lords.

Convocation = miqra (rehearsal/sacred assembly)

Feasts = moed (appointed times)

The Feasts are rehearsals for appointed times.

The Feast of Passover:

Exodus 12New International Version (NIV)The Passover...
12 The Lord said to Moses and Aaron in Egypt, 2 “This month is to be for you the first month, the first month of your year. 3 Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month each man is to take a lamb for his family, one for each household. 4 If any household is too small for a whole lamb, they must share one with their nearest neighbor, having taken into account the number of people there are. You are to determine the amount of lamb needed in accordance with what each person will eat.5 The animals you choose must be year-old males without defect, and you may take them from the sheep or the goats. 6 Take care of them until the fourteenth day of the month, when all the members of the community of Israel must slaughter them at twilight. 7 Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the doorframes of the houses where they eat the lambs.8 That same night they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. 9 Do not eat the meat raw or boiled in water, but roast it over a fire—with the head, legs and internal organs. 10 Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.11 This is how you are to eat it: with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste; it is the Lord’s Passover.

12 “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn of both people and animals, and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. 13 The blood will be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. No destructive plague will touch you when I strike Egypt.

14 “This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord—a lasting ordinance.15 For seven days you are to eat bread made without yeast. On the first day remove the yeast from your houses, for whoever eats anything with yeast in it from the first day through the seventh must be cut off from Israel. 16 On the first day hold a sacred assembly, and another one on the seventh day. Do no work at all on these days, except to prepare food for everyone to eat; that is all you may do.

The Letter of Blood:
Chet = Chai = Life

Lamb for the Nation of Bethlehem:
From special field in Bethlehem.
Meaning of Bethlehem in Hebrew is House of Bread.

Jesus was born in the house of bread because He is the Bread of Life.

The prophecy of Micah predicted Jesus will be born in Bethlehem.

Micah 5:2New International Version (NIV)
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
though you are small among the clans
 of Judah,
out of you will come for me
one who will be ruler over Israel,
whose origins are from of old,
    from ancient times.

Story of Swaddling Cloth:
Luke 2:12King James Version (KJV)
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

Swaddling cloth was used to wrap dead bodies. The Jew would not bury a dead body without being wrapped in a piece of cloth. Joseph wrapped baby Jesus in a swaddling cloth.

Mary gave birth to baby Jesus amongst the straws and animals. Joseph gave a piece of swaddling cloth to Jesus to wrap the baby. When He was born, Jesus was marked for death for you and me.

Baptism of Jesus by John the Baptist:
Genealogy of John the Baptist
Luke 1:5New International Version (NIV)
The Birth of John the Baptist Foretold
In the time of Herod king of Judea there was a priest named Zechariah, who belonged to the priestly division of Abijah; his wife Elizabeth was also a descendant of Aaron.

In the eyes of God, the lineage of John the Baptist, from the father's side, a high priest. His mission was to baptise Jesus.

Baptism of Jesus is symbolic transfer (righteous act of God) and consecretion of John's priesthood in the order of Aaron to Jesus the eternal high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

Jesus now inherits the true priesthood from heaven.

The sins of the nations must be atoned by the blood of Jesus.

The Transfer of Priesthood:
-To fulfill all righteousness of God.

Matthew 3:15New International Version (NIV)
15 Jesus replied, “Let it be so now; it is proper for us to do this to fulfill all righteousness.”

Passover Lamb welcomed (Triumphant entry of Jesus on a donkey through the eastern gate):
Traditionally, four (4) days before Passover every year, the lamb has to be inspected.

"Hosanna! Son of David! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!" Thus, fulfilling prophecy in Zechariah.

Zechariah 9:9New International Version (NIV)
The Coming of Zion’s King
Rejoice greatly, Daughter Zion!
    Shout, Daughter Jerusalem!
See, your king comes to you,
    righteous and victorious,
lowly and riding on a donkey,
on a colt, the foal of a donkey.

Came to make war.
Revelation 19:11New International Version (NIV)
The Heavenly Warrior Defeats the Beast
11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war.

Today the Eastern Gate is sealed with cemeteries around and in front of it.

Muslims sealed the Gate because of a Messianic Prophecy. No Jewish Messiah would defile Himself.

The LORD, the God of Israel, has entered through the gate facing east.

Ezekiel 44:1-2New International Version (NIV)
The Priesthood Restored
44 Then the man brought me back to the outer gate of the sanctuary, the one facing east, and it was shut. The Lord said to me, “This gate is to remain shut. It must not be opened; no one may enter through it. It is to remain shut because the Lord, the God of Israel, has entered through it.

By sealing the Gate, they fulfilled God’s prophecy.

Matthew 26:63-65New International Version (NIV)
63 But Jesus remained silent.
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God.”
64 “You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
65 Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.

Jesus brought to high priest Caiaphas was not the real high priest. The latter charged Him under oath: "Tell us if you are the Messiah, the Son of God."

Jesus replied: "I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man...

The high priest tore his clothes and said: "He has spoken blasphemy. He is worthy of death." He knew he was disqualified.

Psalm 110:1New International Version (NIV)
Of David. A psalm.
The Lord says to my lord:
“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet.”

Psalm 110:4New International Version (NIV)
The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
“You are a priest forever,
    in the order of Melchizedek.”

John 11:49-51New International Version (NIV)
49 Then one of them, named Caiaphas, who was high priest that year, spoke up, “You know nothing at all! 50 You do not realize that it is better for you that one man die for the people than that the whole nation perish.”
51 He did not say this on his own, but as high priest that year he prophesied that Jesus would die for the Jewish nation,

Caiaphas: "It is better for one man to die than an entire nation."

Abraham and Isaac at Mount Moriah:
Genesis 22:2New International Version (NIV)
Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”

Abraham's faith was unthinkable. The angel of the Lord told him to stop. He saw a ram stuck in a thorn bush.

Genesis 22:3-14New International Version (NIV)
Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. On the third day Abraham looked up and saw the place in the distance. He said to his servants, “Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you.”
Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”
“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.
“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”
Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together.
When they reached the place God had told him about, Abraham built an altar there and arranged the wood on it. He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. 10 Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. 11 But the angel of the Lord called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!”
“Here I am,” he replied.
12 “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.”
13 Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. 14 So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the Lord it will be provided.”

Temple Sacrifice:
Jesus was crucified at the same time that the lambs were being sacrificed for the Passover - between 9am and 3pm.

Sounding of the Shofar:
Jesus knows it is over.
Jesus declared: "It is finished."

John 19:30New International Version (NIV)
30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.

The New Testament and Israel

Israel's Call is Irrevocable:
They are loved on the account of the patriarchs, for God's gifts and his call are irrevocable.

Romans 11:28-29New International Version (NIV)
28 As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies for your sake; but as far as election is concerned, they are loved on account of the patriarchs, 29 for God’s gifts and his call are irrevocable.

God has brought the Jew back as a nation. And He has revealed truths to the world.

Israel must be restored and continue to serve God's purpose.

The New Testament validates the Old Testament concept of a Coming Kingdom:
Matthew 23:37-39New International Version (NIV)
37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.38 Look, your house is left to you desolate. 39 For I tell you, you will not see me again until you say, ‘Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

The New Testament endorses the historical mission of Israel.

The whole story of redemption is the story of a strong God and a weak nation.

God used their belief and unbelief to accomplish His purposes.

No one in history ever got saved other than through the cross of Jesus.

In their belief, they gave us the Bible.

In their unbelief, they gave us the Messiah.

Jesus said in John 4:22: "Salvation is from the Jews.” The Gift and blessing of Salvation comes from the Jewish people.
God works it out from the beginning - from Abraham.

In Abraham, God promised the world eternal life; in Isaac, God promised the world atonement or sacrifice (The lamb, Jesus); and in Jacob, God promised the world transformation and reconciliation. (Jacob was rebellious and a tempter/deceiver, thus he needed transformation)

Romans 11:26New International Version (NIV)
26 and in this way  all Israel will be saved. As it is written:

“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

Affirmation of the Abrahamic Covenant:
Hebrews 6:13-18New International Version (NIV)
The Certainty of God’s Promise
13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “I will surely bless you and give you many descendants.” 15 And so after waiting patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16 People swear by someone greater than themselves, and the oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged.

God is completely trustworthy with His covenant because He swore by two unchangeable things - His sovereignty (No one is greater than Him) and His character (that He cannot lie).

Jesus came to fulfill the Abrahamic Covenant:
Genesis 22:16-18New International Version (NIV)
16 and said, “I swear by myself, declares the Lord, that because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, 17 I will surely bless you and make your descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky and as the sand on the seashore. Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies, 18 and through your offspring all nations on earth will be blessed, because you have obeyed me.”

Hebrews 13:20New International Version (NIV)
Benediction and Final Greetings
20 Now may the God of peace, who through the blood of the eternal covenant brought back from the dead our Lord Jesus, that great Shepherd of the sheep,

Luke 1:72-73New International Version (NIV)
72 to show mercy to our ancestors
and to remember his holy covenant,
73     the oath he swore to our father Abraham:

Zacharias praised God for His Holy Covenant and oath He swore to father Abraham.

Galatians 3:8-9New International Version (NIV)
Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the gospel in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.” So those who rely on faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

God preached the Gospel in advance to Abraham: "All nations will be blessed through you." We are the seed of Abraham. We are blessed along with Abraham.

The New Testament validates and reinforces Israel's role in history and her destiny in the land of Canaan.

Natural and Spiritual Israel:

Romans 2:28-29New International Version (NIV)
28 A person is not a Jew who is one only outwardly, nor is circumcision merely outward and physical. 29 No, a person is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is circumcision of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the written code. Such a person’s praise is not from other people, but from God.

Paul did not discard natural Israel nor their destiny and historical mission. Spiritual Israel are all who have faith in Israel. We are all spiritual Israel.

Romans 3:1-4New International Version (NIV)
God’s Faithfulness
What advantage, then, is there in being a Jew, or what value is there in circumcision? Much in every way! First of all, the Jews have been entrusted with the very words of God.
What if some were unfaithful? Will their unfaithfulness nullify God’s faithfulness? Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written:
“So that you may be proved right when you speak
    and prevail when you judge.”

Natural Israel remains custodian of God’s Word.

The Olive Tree:
Jews are natural branches.

Gentile believers are wild olive shoot grafted into the tree.

Jewish Old Testament saints (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, etc) - Hebrews 11 are the hall of fame of faith - they were the first on the Jewish olive tree of belief.

Gentile believers are not to be arrogant/haughty towards non-believing natural Israel but to fear. Have the fear of the Lord.

There is only one tree: one flock, one sheep pen, one family. (Believing Jew and Gentile - the one new man)

Romans 11:24New International Version (NIV)
24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!

The relationship between church and Israel is life and death.

Take a living branch from a living tree and graft it onto a dying tree and make it alive again. Water it over time.

Instantly you get salvation.

Galatians 6:15-16New International Version (NIV)
15 Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation. 16 Peace and mercy to all who follow this rule—to the Israel of God.

The Israel of God - another term for spiritual Israel. "Neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything; what counts is the new creation."

The church has enlarged Israel.

Israel is the root of the church.

Israel is the vehicle of worldwide redemption, mediator of the Great Covenants God gave to the world.

Restoration of Natural Israel:
When Gentile blindness of Israel's role and destiny are removed:

Romans 11:24-26New International Version (NIV)
24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
All Israel Will Be Saved
25 I do not want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you may not be conceited: Israel has experienced a hardening in part until the full number of the Gentiles has come in, 26 and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written:
“The deliverer will come from Zion;
he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

Matthew 24:3-14New International Version (NIV)
3 As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. “Tell us,” they said, “when will this happen, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?”

4 Jesus answered: “Watch out that no one deceives you.5 For many will come in my name, claiming, ‘I am the Messiah,’ and will deceive many. 6 You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come.7 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. 8 All these are the beginning of birth pains.

9 “Then you will be handed over to be persecuted and put to death, and you will be hated by all nations because of me.10 At that time many will turn away from the faith and will betray and hate each other,11 and many false prophets will appear and deceive many people. 12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow cold,13 but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.14 And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come.

As they asked Jesus, He talks about nations rising against nations, wars, famines and earthquakes. According to Jesus, this mystery of salvation is more than just personal; it concerns the world and the fate of the world. All the nations will hate you because of the name of Jesus.

Jesus is warning us that this is not just happening in isolated places; it is going to be worldwide.

Many will betray and leave the faith.

The love of many will grow cold.

Many will be deceived.

This is the time to pray to extend a lifeline from heaven.

Prayer is a mystery because it has so many dimensions--from personal to corporate level.

It is necessary to pray beyond the personal level--families, communities, cities, nations.

The Lord showed breakthroughs happen when true repentance take place. (Instead of focusing our prayers on just "God help us")

There is power in the name of Jesus. There is power in prayer. Nothing is too hard for God to do.

When God is dealing with issues with your life, He can get to us through scriptures etc.

When we are dealing with families, communities, nations, we are dealing with things beyond our own control.

Jeremiah 7:16-19New International Version (NIV)
16 “So do not pray for this people nor offer any plea or petition for them; do not plead with me, for I will not listen to you. 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the towns of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers light the fire, and the women knead the dough and make cakes to offer to the Queen of Heaven. They pour out drink offerings to other gods to arouse my anger. 19 But am I the one they are provoking? declares the Lord. Are they not rather harming themselves, to their own shame?

Can God refuse prayer?

Isaiah 59:1-2New International Version (NIV)

Sin, Confession and Redemption

59 Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear.
2 But your iniquities have separated you from your God; your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.

It is very important to know that God has a right to expect His name to be honoured.

Jesus, the Lamb of God, has already paid too much for us. He died for us and rose again.

We come to God on the strength of the sufferings, cries and miseries of the people.

Come, present your cares.

Isaiah 43:26New King James Version (NKJV)

26 Put Me in remembrance;
Let us contend together;
State your case, that you may be acquitted.

Let's argue.

Isaiah 1:18New King James Version (NKJV)

18 “Come now, and let us reason together,”
Says the Lord,
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
They shall be as white as snow;
Though they are red like crimson,
They shall be as wool.

God's love towards us is full of hope and victory.

Take the responsibility of the people and the land before God.

Daniel 9:1-19New King James Version (NKJV)

Daniel’s Prayer for the People

In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the lineage of the Medes, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans— in the first year of his reign I, Daniel, understood by the books the number of the years specified by the word of the Lord through Jeremiah the prophet, that He would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.
Then I set my face toward the Lord God to make request by prayer and supplications, with fasting, sackcloth, and ashes. And I prayed to theLord my God, and made confession, and said, “O Lord, great and awesome God, who keeps His covenant and mercy with those who love Him, and with those who keep His commandments, we have sinned and committed iniquity, we have done wickedly and rebelled, even by departing from Your precepts and Your judgments. Neither have we heeded Your servants the prophets, who spoke in Your name to our kings and our princes, to our fathers and all the people of the land. O Lord, righteousness belongs to You, but to us shame of face, as it is this day—to the men of Judah, to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and all Israel, those near and those far off in all the countries to which You have driven them, because of the unfaithfulness which they have committed against You.
“O Lord, to us belongs shame of face, to our kings, our princes, and our fathers, because we have sinned against You. To the Lord our Godbelong mercy and forgiveness, though we have rebelled against Him.10 We have not obeyed the voice of the Lord our God, to walk in His laws, which He set before us by His servants the prophets. 11 Yes, all Israel has transgressed Your law, and has departed so as not to obey Your voice; therefore the curse and the oath written in the Law of Moses the servant of God have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against Him. 12 And He has confirmed His words, which He spoke against us and against our judges who judged us, by bringing upon us a great disaster; for under the whole heaven such has never been done as what has been done to Jerusalem.
13 “As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us; yet we have not made our prayer before the Lord our God, that we might turn from our iniquities and understand Your truth. 14 Therefore the Lord has kept the disaster in mind, and brought it upon us; for theLord our God is righteous in all the works which He does, though we have not obeyed His voice. 15 And now, O Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand, and made Yourself a name, as it is this day—we have sinned, we have done wickedly!
16 “O Lord, according to all Your righteousness, I pray, let Your anger and Your fury be turned away from Your city Jerusalem, Your holy mountain; because for our sins, and for the iniquities of our fathers, Jerusalem and Your people are a reproach to all those around us. 17 Now therefore, our God, hear the prayer of Your servant, and his supplications, and for the Lord’s sake cause Your face to shine on Your sanctuary, which is desolate. 18 O my God, incline Your ear and hear; open Your eyes and see our desolations, and the city which is called by Your name; for we do not present our supplications before You because of our righteous deeds, but because of Your great mercies. 19 O Lord, hear! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, listen and act! Do not delay for Your own sake, my God, for Your city and Your people are called by Your name.”

Daniel is praying for the people who are suffering in exile. God's name is destroyed.

Isaiah 59:3-14
3 For your hands are stained with blood, your fingers with guilt. Your lips have spoken falsely, and your tongue mutters wicked things.
4 No one calls for justice; no one pleads a case with integrity. They rely on empty arguments, they utter lies; they conceive trouble and give birth to evil.
5 They hatch the eggs of vipers and spin a spider’s web. Whoever eats their eggs will die, and when one is broken, an adder is hatched.
6 Their cobwebs are useless for clothing; they cannot cover themselves with what they make. Their deeds are evil deeds, and acts of violence are in their hands.
7 Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.
8 The way of peace they do not know; there is no justice in their paths. They have turned them into crooked roads; no one who walks along them will know peace.

9 So justice is far from us, and righteousness does not reach us. We look for light, but all is darkness; for brightness, but we walk in deep shadows.
10 Like the blind we grope along the wall, feeling our way like people without eyes. At midday we stumble as if it were twilight; among the strong, we are like the dead.
11 We all growl like bears; we moan mournfully like doves. We look for justice, but find none; for deliverance, but it is far away.

12 For our offenses are many in your sight, and our sins testify against us. Our offenses are ever with us, and we acknowledge our iniquities:
13 rebellion and treachery against the Lord, turning our backs on our God, inciting revolt and oppression, uttering lies our hearts have conceived.
14 So justice is driven back, and righteousness stands at a distance; truth has stumbled in the streets, honesty cannot enter.

God feels their pain and turmoil.

Is there no one standing in the gap for them?

Isaiah 59:15-16
15 Truth is nowhere to be found, and whoever shuns evil becomes a prey.

The Lord looked and was displeased that there was no justice.
16 He saw that there was no one, he was appalled that there was no one to intervene; so his own arm achieved salvation for him, and his own righteousness sustained him.

We carry the sins of the people.

But if we humble ourselves and call upon His name in repentance and stand in the gap for our people, He will hear us. When He hears us, then we have what we are praying for. If we ask according to His will.

Supernatural Community - Transformational Life Groups

Bro Erik Lai
05-03-2017

All of us have been called for a purpose in this season to influence people for God.

The Holy Spirit can transform God's people into a supernatural community.

Acts 2:40-47The Message (MSG)
40 He went on in this vein for a long time, urging them over and over, “Get out while you can; get out of this sick and stupid culture!”

41-42 That day about three thousand took him at his word, were baptized and were signed up. They committed themselves to the teaching of the apostles, the life together, the common meal, and the prayers.

43-45 Everyone around was in awe—all those wonders and signs done through the apostles! And all the believers lived in a wonderful harmony, holding everything in common. They sold whatever they owned and pooled their resources so that each person’s need was met.

46-47 They followed a daily discipline of worship in the Temple followed by meals at home, every meal a celebration, exuberant and joyful, as they praised God. People in general liked what they saw. Every day their number grew as God added those who were saved.

Acts is about the exponential growth of the church.

This was after Jesus was crucified. This was after the Holy Spirit came upon the people.

They continued to:

1) Learn
2) Care
3) Fellowship
4) Worship God

They saw beyond the situation and circumstances, and prepared the people (persecution). When persecution did come, they were ready and considered it worthy.

Day by day, the Lord added to their number.

They devoted themselves to the Word of God and the Apostles' teachings.

Every need was met through the sharing, breaking of bread and eating together.

It was a community that was different from what they were used to before.

It was a community that lived for each other.

Prayer was essential and integral. As a result of this, the community grew. The church expanded and multiplied. Because the people prayed.

God did signs and wonders as they prayed and trusted God.

The vitality of the church was measured by the vitality of prayer.

The church community in Acts 2:42-47:
1) Spiritual community
2) Servant community (they washed each other's feet)
3) Saving community (they proclaimed the Good News)

Small groups exist for people to engage in a biblical community -- to become more like Jesus.

HF vision:
-Build Christ-centred relationships,
-Demonstrate God's love, and
-Transform our community

Build relationships that are Christ-centred.
Be doers of the Word. Love one another in practical ways. Love covers a multitude of sins. Then we transform the community.

HF goals:
-Evangelise (community transformation)
-Equip and Edify (discipleship and nurturing)
-Empower (multiplication of HFs)

4 groups of people:
-Subtract (always take things away from you)
-Divide (out to destro you)
-Add (contribute to your life)
-Multiply (magnify, grow and develop you so that you reach your maximum potential. Demonstrate God's love)

GROW (Acts 2:42-47):
-God (He Himself is in a community of 3 persons who exist in perfect unity)
-Relationship
-Outreach
-Worship

It is not good to be man to be alone. (Genesis 2:18)
God created us to be in a community.

This statement was made before the fall of men. Adam was living in perfect communion and fellowship with God. Yet God said it is not good for man to be alone.

"Community is deeply grounded in the nature of God. It flows from who God is. Because he is community, he creates community. It is his gift of himself to humans. Therefore, the making of community may not be regarded as an optional decision for Christians. It is a compelling and irrevocable necessity, a binding divine mandate for all believers at all times."
- Dr. Gilbert Bilezikian
(Professor Emeritus, Wheaton College; Co-founder of Willow Creek Church; Author of Community 101 & Christianity 101)

Jesus Himself called 12 disciples to be in His community. He loved them and taught them. He created the first home fellowship.

The Apostles continued this model and form communities of believers because they were grounded in the Word, they prayed together, they turned the world upside down.

4 Distinctive Features:
1) God

He is the reason and centre of everything we do.

Matthew 22:37-40New International Version (NIV)
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Colossians 1:9-14New International Version (NIV)
9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives, 10 so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, 11 being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, 12 and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.13 For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, 14 in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

It was all about God. Each time they gathered, they celebrated God and engaged in life together through prayer, fellowship, communion and radical generosity. They demonstrated the love of God in practical and supernatural ways. They supported each other. They treated each other as one body in Christ.

Colossians 1:9-14
-God fills us with the knowledge of His will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives
-We live a life worthy of the Lord and please Him in every way
-Bearing fruit in every good work
-Growing in the knowledge of God
-Being strengthened with all power according to His glorious might
-Giving joyful thanks to the Father

How do we grow in our intimacy, knowledge of God, know and live out His will?
-Encounter and fellowship with Him daily (Connect with God)
-Read His Word daily (Hearing from Him)
-Pray (Talk with Him)
-Fellowship with other believers (Join a Life Group)
-Practise and apply His Word in our daily life (walk the talk and talk the walk)

"I stopped approaching my quiet time as a spiritual positioning activity for the day and began to approach it as an encounter with Christ."
- Bob Roberts Jr

2) Relationship

Love is centre and reason

John 13:34-35New International Version (NIV)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

"People don't care how much you know until they know how much you care"
- John C. Maxwell

God never intended for us to live the Christian life alone.

He calls us to encounter one another so that our lives become transformed.

Be an agent of change even to toxic people. Through our love, we can transform them.

Through the New Testament, it was a way of life - spiritually significent intentional relationship with one another. Being church instead of doing church. Iron sharpens iron.

We live in a fragmented and disconnected world. We have thousands of friends in Facebook but we do not even know our neighbour.

In a life group, we build relationship whom we care and they care for us.

We don't compete with each other but we complete one another.

"God uses people to form people."
- John Ortberg

The main goal is to be more like Jesus. Live our life to be Christ-like in every manner.

Relationship is the glue that holds people together. It must be built upon:
-God's love (our human love is finite but God's love is infinite that we can even love our enemy and God's love can soften the hearts of the greatest sinner)
-Trust
-Honesty
-Integrity
-Sincerity
-Truth
-Respect
-Genuine concern and care for one another
-and many more...

If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
-African Proverb

Together, we can make great impact for God.

3) Outreach

Mission is the heartbeat of God

John 3:16
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

John 13:34-35New International Version (NIV)
34 “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. 35 By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Matthew 28:16-20New International Version (NIV)

The Great Commission

16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go.17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

People will know us by our love for one another and by our love for them.

Christian community is the final apologetic.

"The beginning and the end of all Christian leadership is to give your life for others."

"Our greatest fulfillment lies in giving ourselves to others."

- Henri Nouwen

This is our mission and our outreach.

Seriously think about our role as salt and light and be involved in transforming communities.

Psalm 68:5New International Version (NIV)
5 A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows,
is God in his holy dwelling.

Isaiah 1:17New International Version (NIV)
17 Learn to do right; seek justice.
    Defend the oppressed.
Take up the cause of the fatherless;
plead the case of the widow.

4) Worship

Worship is Worthship.
Worship is not a noun but a verb.

1 Chronicles 16:23-31New International Version (NIV)

23 Sing to the Lord, all the earth;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
24 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.

25 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
26 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
27 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and joy are in his dwelling place.

28 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lordglory and strength.
29 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come before him.
Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.
30     Tremble before him, all the earth!
The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved.

31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let them say among the nations, “The Lord reigns!”

Romans 12:1-2New International Version (NIV)

A Living Sacrifice

12 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

"Worship must be - Christ centered, Holy Spirit led, a Response to the Father, about Intimacy and Service and always lead to Transformation!"
- Tim Hughes

"Worship changes the worshiper into the image of the One worshiped."

- Jack Hayford

The secret of the sequoia tree is they never grow alone.

We are only as strong as the ordinary member but together, we bring transformation.

Isaiah 54:1-17
The Future Glory of Zion

54 “Sing, barren woman,
    you who never bore a child;
burst into song, shout for joy,
    you who were never in labor;
because more are the children of the desolatewoman
than of her who has a husband,”
says theLord.
2 “Enlarge the place of your tent,
    stretch your tent curtains wide,
    do not hold back;
lengthen your cords,
    strengthen your stakes.
3 For you will spread out to the right and to the left;
    your descendants will dispossess nations
and settle in their desolate cities.

4 “Do not be afraid; you will not be put to shame.
Do not fear disgrace;you will not be humiliated.
You will forget the shame of your youth
and remember no more the reproach of your widowhood.
5 For your Maker is your husband—
the Lord Almighty is his name—
the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer;
he is called the God of all the earth.
6 The Lord will call you back
as if you were a wife deserted and distressed in spirit—
a wife who married young,
only to be rejected,” says your God.
7 “For a brief moment I abandoned you,
but with deep compassion I will bring you back.
8 In a surge of anger
I hid my face from you for a moment,
but with everlasting kindness
    I will have compassionon you,”
    says the Lord your Redeemer.

9 “To me this is like the days of Noah,
when I swore that the waters of Noah would never again cover the earth.
So now I have sworn not to be angry with you,
    never to rebuke you again.
10 Though the mountains be shaken
    and the hills be removed,
yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken
nor my covenant of peace be removed,”
says the Lord, who has compassion on you.

11 “Afflicted city, lashed by storms and not comforted,
I will rebuild you with stones of turquoise,
    your foundations with lapis lazuli.
12 I will make your battlements of rubies,
    your gates of sparkling jewels,
and all your walls of precious stones.
13 All your children will be taught by the Lord,
and great will be their peace.
14 In righteousness you will be established:
Tyranny will be far from you;
you will have nothing to fear.
Terror will be far removed;
it will not come near you.
15 If anyone does attack you, it will not be my doing;
whoever attacks you will surrender to you.

16 “See, it is I who created the blacksmith
who fans the coals into flame
and forges a weapon fit for its work.
And it is I who have created the destroyer to wreak havoc;
17     no weapon forged against you will prevail,
and you will refute every tongue that accuses you.
This is the heritage of the servants of the Lord,
and this is their vindication from me,”
declares the Lord.

The Israelites were living in exile, in a foreign land. God gave them this promise to get ready to stretch their tent.

It talks about the future promise and restoration of Israel.

Genesis 12:2
“I will make you into a great nation,
    and I will bless you;
I will make your name great,
and you will be a blessing.

1) The Promise of Restoration and Renewal (Isaiah 54:1-10)

Don't neglect your walk with God. Through Jesus Christ, our restoration with the Father is done. As a family, we can claim this for our family and our community to restore relationships with one another.

This was God's promise to Abraham so that he could be a blessing to others and nations.

Through Jesus Christ, you are also descendants of Abraham. No matter how broken we are, God is able to do the impossible. We can be a blessing to others. As a family, we can bring this restoration to other families. God is doing great things in our midst. Bring this message of hope through Jesus Christ to other families.

2) The Promise of Peace and Safety (Isaiah 54:10-17)

God has His lovingkindness towards His people.

The Israelites were constantly in fear in a land that was not their own.

In our own land, we are living in a situation where peace and safety are challenge. We are in a perilous time.

Turn to God. In Jesus Christ alone, we have peace. Only in the presence of God that we are reminded of His lovingkindness and His peace. God assures us that He is with us.

Hold onto God. Enlarge our faith. Look into the lense of faith and ask God to make us a blessing in our land. We can share this peace and blessing with others. Our community is surrounded with families that are broken. We can share this peace with them.

3) The Promise of Prosperity and Security (Isaiah 54: 11-17)

God is holy. We are called to live a life of holiness through the Word of God and teach our children so that they too will live this life of holiness.

When we come together as a family altar, we are reminded of His promises.

Deuteronomy 6:1-9
Love the Lord Your God

6 These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess,2 so that you, your children and their children after them may fearthe Lord your God as long as you live by keeping all his decrees and commands that I give you, and so that you may enjoy long life. 3 Hear, Israel, and be careful to obey so that it may go well with you and that you may increase greatly in a land flowing with milk and honey, just as theLord, the God of your ancestors, promised you.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. 5 Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. 6 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts.7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. 9 Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

We have God's promise to bless us and to grow us.

The respond towards the promise is:
Faith and Obedience

As a church:

Vision: A Spirit-filled Church that makes Christ known to all peoples

Mission: Go Make Disciples

The Great Commission

Conclusion:
Isaiah 52 - A Promise of Growth

Our response to the promise is through faith and obedience.

Keep our focus on the world and hold on to it.

Matthew 22:1-14
The Parable of the Wedding Banquet

22 Jesus spoke to them again in parables, saying: 2 “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son. 3 He sent his servants to those who had been invited to the banquet to tell them to come, but they refused to come.

4 “Then he sent some more servantsand said, ‘Tell those who have been invited that I have prepared my dinner: My oxen and fattened cattle have been butchered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.’

5 “But they paid no attention and went off—one to his field, another to his business. 6 The rest seized his servants, mistreated them and killed them. 7 The king was enraged. He sent his army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.

8 “Then he said to his servants, ‘The wedding banquet is ready, but those I invited did not deserve to come.9 So go to the street corners and invite to the banquet anyone you find.’ 10 So the servants went out into the streets and gathered all the people they could find, the bad as well as the good, and the wedding hall was filled with guests.

11 “But when the king came in to see the guests, he noticed a man there who was not wearing wedding clothes. 12 He asked, ‘How did you get in here without wedding clothes, friend?’ The man was speechless.

13 “Then the king told the attendants, ‘Tie him hand and foot, and throw him outside, into the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

14 “For many are invited, but few are chosen.”

Luke 14:16-24
16 Jesus replied: “A certain man was preparing a great banquet and invited many guests. 17 At the time of the banquet he sent his servant to tell those who had been invited, ‘Come, for everything is now ready.’

18 “But they all alike began to make excuses. The first said, ‘I have just bought a field, and I must go and see it. Please excuse me.’

19 “Another said, ‘I have just bought five yoke of oxen, and I’m on my way to try them out. Please excuse me.’

20 “Still another said, ‘I just got married, so I can’t come.’

21 “The servant came back and reported this to his master. Then the owner of the house became angry and ordered his servant, ‘Go out quickly into the streets and alleys of the town and bring in the poor, the crippled, the blind and the lame.’

22 “‘Sir,’ the servant said, ‘what you ordered has been done, but there is still room.’

23 “Then the master told his servant, ‘Go out to the roads and country lanes and compel them to come in, so that my house will be full. 24 I tell you, not one of those who were invited will get a taste of my banquet.’”

They were invited to a wedding banquet but their first response was they will not come.

In the house of the king, there was a man who was unprepared and he was speechless.

Three groups of people:

1) They make excuses. They make light of the call. I'm sorry. I cannot come.

2) They come prepared.

3) They come unprepared.

"For many are called, but few are chosen." (Matthew 22:14)

When Jesus came to the Jews, He came to the people whose fathers and forefathers knew what it was to serve to God.

The Kingdom call: "The time is near. The Kingdom of God is near. Follow Me."

He healed the sick. The people followed.

He performed signs and wonders. The people followed.

How then should we respond?

The chosenness comes out of an understanding what the Lord wants to call us into a place in which we can respond and follow Him wholeheartedly.

The Lord Himself wants to come and meet us personally. So come prepared and stand chosen.

The heart of God is for all. In this season of visitation, He wants to give us a Kingdom that cannot be shaken.

John the baptist understood that he only baptised with water and that there is Someone who comes after him who baptises with the Spirit and fire.

There is more because we are about to receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken.

How do we respond to the call?

Be willing to prepare our hearts and take every necessary actions to stand chosen to meet with and encounter God, and the Lord will make us greater than something we cannot imagine.

He wants to raise up a people who say, "I saw the Lord."
