Pentecost

Rev Colin Chow
19-05-2018

Tonight is God's Holy day. In the Hebrew calendar, the day begins at sundown.

It is Pentecost today.

It is a day of God's appointed feast.

Seven biblical feasts in Leviticus 23:
Passover - the death of Jesus on the cross
Unleavened bread
Firstfruits - the day of resurrection

These three are the spring feasts.

Passover opens the door for us to come into the kingdom of God. Blood had to be shed.

Pentecost (50 days after passover, in the summer) - the coming of the Holy Spirit

Pentecost is also known as shavuot - the giving of the Law

Pentecost is about revelation and harvest.

Acts 2 New King James Version (NKJV)
Coming of the Holy Spirit
2 When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all [a]with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. 3 Then there appeared to them [b]divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

The Crowd’s Response
5 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. 6 And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. 7 Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, “Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? 8 And how is it that we hear, each in our own [c]language in which we were born? 9 Parthians and Medes and Elamites, those dwelling in Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10 Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya adjoining Cyrene, visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretans and [d]Arabs—we hear them speaking in our own tongues the wonderful works of God.” 12 So they were all amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “Whatever could this mean?”

13 Others mocking said, “They are full of new wine.”

The Feasts are fundamental steps God instructed His people to observe.

They are God's divine appointment, specific dates on His timetable.

He laid the foundation. His people are to build on it.

Jesus fulfilled the first four Feasts on earth.

Jesus fulfilled the Father's redemptive work on each Feast dates.

Pentecost gives us the power to evangelise.

We are to build something of substance of essence.

-Follow the Principle
-Keep the Pattern
-Get into Position

On the day of First fruit (spring), it is the first ripening of the year of the barley harvest.

The whole of this first fruit must be offered to God.

The Feast of First fruit teaches us to put God first in our lives.

First fruit is a promise to come.

This promise comes in 50 days, which is Pentecost.

When Naomi and Ruth arrived in Israel, it was the beginning of barley harvest.

Ruth 1:22 New King James Version (NKJV)
22 So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. Now they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

Ruth 2:3 New King James Version (NKJV)
3 Then she left, and went and gleaned in the field after the reapers. And she happened to come to the part of the field belonging to Boaz, who was of the family of Elimelech.

God granted her desire of a perfect marriage with Boaz.

Pentecost is about "harvest" and "revelation."

In the Old Testament, Pentecost is about giving of the word (the Torah).

Today, we want to be aligned with the Word of God. We know the bible but are we living the bible?

In the New Testament, Pentecost is about the Empowerment of the Holy Spirit.

We want that empowerment so that we can serve Him from glory to glory.

We carry in us the kingdom of God and the light of Christ.

Pentecost is when the people of God live on the power of His Word, and overshadowed by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Faith without works is nothing.

Pentecost is about "Suddenly." "Suddenly" there is a change coming.

It is about God's people coming in one place and with one accord. Unity is so important.

The 120 back in the day were in one place and with one accord.

When the day of Pentecost had fully come, tongues of fire appeared and transformed the disciples.

Genesis 1:1-2 New King James Version (NKJV)
The History of Creation
1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 The earth was without form, and void; and darkness [a]was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

It is similar to the Spirit of God on the day of creation.

Supernatural power was released to the early church.

It was a fulfilment of Joel 2:28.

Harvest has been waiting, but harvest cannot come until the day of Pentecost, which is 50 days later.

Harvest is not just saving souls. It includes everything that God desires to give us in our lives. But because of demonic warfare, it hinders this promise of God in our lives.

"Suddenly" the disciples received power.

"Suddenly" Peter was a changes man.

"Suddenly" the 3,000 were saved.

"Suddenly" there is a shift in the season.

"Suddenly" there is an ushering in of a new era.

Before Jews and Gentiles were separate.

"Suddenly" the church was born.

"Suddenly" let me get a new way of thinking and saying things.

"Suddenly" let me have a renewed mind.

"Suddenly" I will begin to declare the utterances of God.

How do I do it?

Prioritise God's presence in my life.

Let me get a new lifestyle--one that puts God first.

Putting action with my faith.

James 2:20-24 New King James Version (NKJV)
20 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is [a]dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made [b]perfect? 23 And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was [c]accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God. 24 You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.

Put faith into action. Do it!

James 1:22 New King James Version (NKJV)
22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

The Word of God gives light.

John 1:4-5 New King James Version (NKJV)
4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not [a]comprehend it.

This is the Light of God Himself on creation.

Have the light of Christ in you.

God's Word is Spirit.

Our end goal is to get into the holy of holies.

He desires for you to walk in divine illumination.
